I want to help you breathe better!
“Breathing is the first act of life and the last. Our very life depends on it.” – Joseph Pilates
We take breathing for granted. Sure, our bodies will naturally continue breathing for us (thank goodness!), whether we’re conscious of it or not. So why should we be more conscientious of our breath?
In our everyday lives, stressful situations (whether at work, home, work-at-home!, on the road, wherever) can alter our breathing. Many of us, under stressful situations (which can become more our norm, unfortunately), tend to hold tension in the shoulder and neck area. We also tend to overuse the accessory breathing muscles in the neck and shoulders to breathe, rather than deep, diaphragmatic breathing. This shallow breathing pattern can also leave us feeling tired or worse.
In this video, I give you some exercises you can do to help relax your shoulders and mobilize your ribs. Personally, after I do these exercises, I always feel like I’ve had a massage of sorts because my movements feel more free and I am more relaxed. And when your ribs can move more easily with less tension in your shoulders, then you’ll breathe more freely. And when you can breathe more freely, you’ll improve your movements, not only in Pilates class, but in your everyday life!
Use some or all of these exercises during your week and see how you feel. Better yet, try to add one or two movements into your day. Fit some of these exercises into your movement break away from your device or even right before bedtime to help you relax.
I’m also working on two more videos: One on shoulder mobility and the other on rotator cuff strengthening. I would really recommend the shoulder mobility video in conjunction with the breathing video. Those two will really get you breathing like a champ!
Let me know if you have any questions and tell me how you feel after trying this video!
