Prenatal and Postnatal Pilates: Strengthening Your Body Through Every Stage of Motherhood in St-Henri, Montreal

en français

As a Pilates instructor with over 14 years of experience, I’ve had the privilege of working with many prenatal Pilates clients throughout the different stages of their pregnancies. For the past five years, I’ve been teaching out of my private Pilates studio in St-Henri, Montreal, and during that time, I’ve witnessed firsthand how Pilates can be a game-changer for expectant and new mothers. Pilates is an incredibly effective tool for building strength, improving flexibility, and enhancing mobility—not just during pregnancy, but throughout the entire recovery process for postnatal Pilates clients, too.

In addition to my classical Pilates certification, I’ve continued my education by completing specialized pre- and post-natal workshops, deepening my understanding of how to support women during this transformative time. However, it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I had the chance to experience prenatal and postnatal Pilates for myself (see my last prenatal Pilates workout at 37 weeks below).

While I’ve only been pregnant once and can’t compare how Pilates affects one pregnancy to another, I can share that many of my clients have told me that Pilates has significantly improved their pregnancy experience. From feeling stronger and more balanced to managing the physical demands of pregnancy with greater ease, many have reported that Pilates helped them have a smoother, quicker labor than in previous pregnancies.

Beyond my classical Pilates certification, I also hold a certification in contemporary Pilates, which allows me to offer a more well-rounded approach to prenatal and postnatal care. Some exercises from contemporary Pilates can be especially beneficial for expectant mothers, and when combined with the classical Pilates apparatus—like the Small Arm Chair, Pedipul, and Foot Corrector—I’m able to offer a truly personalized, comprehensive experience for each client.

Why Choose Pilates During Pregnancy and Postpartum?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period are times of profound physical change, and maintaining a strong, flexible body can help you navigate those changes with ease. Whether you are pregnant or recovering after childbirth, Pilates offers many benefits:

Prenatal Pilates: Supporting You Through Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a beautiful, transformative experience—but it also presents physical challenges. Pilates offers a safe, gentle way to stay strong and support your body through this important time.

In my St-Henri Pilates studio, I tailor each session based on your unique body and the stage of your pregnancy. Whether you are in your first, second, or third trimester, I will adjust the exercises to ensure that you are always comfortable and safe. Classical Pilates exercises are fantastic for targeting the core, back, and pelvic floor muscles, which are especially important during pregnancy. Plus, using Pilates apparatuses like the Reformer or Tower can provide gentle, supported stretches and movements to alleviate common pregnancy discomforts.

I can also incorporate elements from contemporary Pilates, which is especially useful for adjusting movements to accommodate the changing needs of your body. For example, we can focus on alignment and breathing techniques that promote relaxation and reduce stress, which is important as your pregnancy progresses.

Postnatal Pilates: Recovering Your Strength and Confidence

After childbirth, your body goes through a recovery phase, and Pilates can be an invaluable tool to help you restore core strength, improve posture, and regain balance. Whether you had a vaginal birth or a C-section, Pilates is gentle enough to support your body while still challenging enough to rebuild strength.

Postnatal Pilates focuses on rebuilding the deep core muscles, including the pelvic floor, which often weaken during pregnancy and childbirth. Pilates apparatuses, like the Reformer and Barrels, are fantastic for providing your body the feedback for the controlled movements to help you ease back into exercise and strengthen muscles in a supportive way. For clients who may be new to Pilates or are experiencing more intense physical limitations, I’ll modify movements from both classical and contemporary Pilates to create a gentle, restorative experience.

As every new mom’s journey is different, I adapt the program based on how your body is feeling, progressing, and healing. Whether you’re looking to regain strength, relieve pain, or simply feel better in your own body, postnatal Pilates in St-Henri is an excellent way to take care of yourself.
