CadanceLogoFigureDarkerLines What is Pilates?

Pilates is a dynamic exercise method that utilizes resistance training to develop strength, muscle tone, and flexibility. Created by Joseph Pilates, this system—originally called ‘Contrology’—is designed to strengthen your entire body from top to bottom. Each Pilates exercise engages multiple muscle groups, ensuring balanced development and improved overall fitness.

Meet Your Instructor: Rachel Santos

I hold certifications in both classical and contemporary Pilates, ensuring a well-rounded approach to your fitness journey. I am dedicated to maintaining and enhancing my knowledge through regular continuing education classes and workshops. This ongoing commitment allows me to stay current with the latest techniques and best practices in Pilates, so I can provide you with the highest quality instruction tailored to your needs.

I successfully completed the Real Pilates teacher training program, developed by 2nd generation teacher Alycea Ungaro. This rigorous program adheres closely to the original techniques of Joseph Pilates, focusing on the principles of Contrology. Mr. Pilates handed down his body of work of the Contrology method to Romana Kryzanowska, whom he had made director of his studio; she then passed on the work to Alycea Ungaro. The Real Pilates program is based on Romana Kryzanowska’s syllabus from the early 1990’s when she was at the peak of her teaching. With a strong foundation rooted in those teachings, Real Pilates training combines traditional methods with modern insights from Alycea Ungaro’s background as a physical therapist.

I am also comprehensively certified in STOTT PILATES®, a contemporary method that incorporates modern principles of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation. Co-founded by Moira (who also studied under Romana Kryzanowska) and Lindsay G. Merrithew, this approach is ideal for everyone—from rehab clients to athletes.

Getting Started: Before joining group classes, I highly recommend scheduling an introductory private session (single session or introductory package of four) to familiarize yourself with the fundamentals of Pilates. This will help you feel more confident and prepared for group workouts. If you have any injuries or limitations, private sessions offer a personalized approach to address your specific needs.
