What is jazz dance?
Jazz dance is a common form of dance used in musical theatre and the commercial and entertainment industries. It has its roots in social dance and is heavily influenced by African-American traditions.  Jazz dance technique is based on elements of ballet and modern dance and incorporates syncopation and isolations of the body.

Class description

Students of all levels work on gaining strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination, musicality, and performance skills. Classes include a warm-up, technique exercises, across-the-floor exercises, choreography, and stretches. Various styles are covered throughout the term: Broadway, funky, lyrical, contemporary, thrash, and everything in between. Above all, Cadance classes allow students to work on their jazz dance technique in a fun, no-pressure atmosphere!  Jazz shoes are recommended, but not required – socks or bare feet can also work.  Wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely in – nothing too baggy.

Absolute Beginners Jazz Bootcamp
A new class for our mini summer sessions only.  If you aren’t sure what the difference is between a plié and a pirouette, first position and second position, or your right from your left, this class is for you!  In this hour-long class, we’ll work on coordination of basic steps to the music.  Challenge yourself by concurrently taking open-level jazz class to get a feel for learning choreography.

Introduce basic jazz movement vocabulary, dance terminology, and exploration of different styles of jazz dance technique. Focus on musicality, body placement, and isolations. The beginning student will learn fundamentals of chaîné turns, pirouettes, basic ballet barre exercises, and other loco-motor movements, such as ball change, jazz square, chassé, and cross ball change.

Expand jazz movement vocabulary and dance terminology, continuing to explore the different styles of jazz dance technique. Build performance skills, working on more complex choreography and across-the-floor combinations. The skills the intermediate dancer should have include single jazz pirouette, chaîné turns, jazz pas de bourrée, isolations, contractions, and flat back.

Continue working on different styles of the jazz technique, learning stylized combinations that focus on style and performance. The more experienced dancer should be able to execute split leaps (grand jetés), center split leaps, double and triple pirouettes, and other advanced tricks such as kicks, leaps, and turns.

  What is Stott Pilates?
STOTT PILATES® is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates. Co‑founders Moira and Lindsay G. Merrithew, along with a team of physical therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals, have spent more than two decades refining the STOTT PILATES® method of exercise and equipment. This resulted in the inclusion of modern principles of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation, making it one of the safest and effective methods available. This clear and detailed approach forms the basis for STOTT PILATES® training and certification programs. It’s used by rehab and prenatal clients, athletes, celebrities and everyone in between.

STOTT PILATES® improves core strength and stability and balances the muscles around the joints, improving the way your body functions, looks, and feels. It focuses specifically on:

• Breathing
• Pelvic placement
• Rib-cage placement
• Scapular movement
• Head & cervical spine placement

Matwork Class levels

Matwork classes are offered for all levels and may include small props to make the workouts more fun and dynamic. You will be taken through a challenging, full-body workout designed to strengthen core stability, lengthen muscles, increase flexibility, and flatten the abdominals.  The +Barre means we’ll add some popular standing barre method work to tone and lengthen you in a fun, challenging way!

Before joining the Pilates group classes, we recommend that you do an entrance assessment and/or some privates.  This will ensure you understand the basic principles and help you follow the group workout much more easily.

À la carte students are always welcome, but we recommend calling in advance to ensure there is space available.  Capacity is 6 students.  Wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely in with socks or bare feet – nothing too baggy.  There is no need to bring a mat with you to class as all Pilates mats and props will be provided for you.
ANQ (naturotherapy) receipts for private Pilates issued upon request.

What is GROOVE?
Get your GROOVE on as you develop functional strength, increase your cardiovascular endurance, improve your flexibility, balance, and coordination, and reduce stress!

GROOVE is a dance-based workout where you explore simple movement to great music to make your body feel good and foster vibrant health. No dance experience required. Forget about complicated choreography and follow the leader type classes; when you GROOVE, you simply get to move YOUR way!  Unlike a traditional dance or fitness class, the GROOVE facilitator gives 2-3 different steps per song to keep it simple and to allow you to find your own way of GROOVING the movement.  It’s a great alternative to the gym which is suitable for all abilities!
